My two cents opinion,
since z/VM and zLinux can be IPLed from a DVD (by my experience) I see no reason
why you could not IPL z/OS from DVD.
I see one: IBM will.
IBM decided to set up DVD IPL for VM and Linux. IBM did not prepared

Does the HMC DVD appear as a channel attached device, or is it accessed
by a LAN connection to the HMC?
That's the problem. It's neither device, nor network station. You cannot
access HMC (or DVD drive) as channel attached device. It also do

Arie,
Thanks. We knew it can be done and so tells the HMC help screen. We will try
to ipl next week from a DVD after changing to Single Object Operation (so
far, we tried without it) and report here. It seems not well documented in
the HMC user guide.
Paul,
The load program is stored in the HMC a

Of course as mentioned above, you must format the correct files on the DVD.
Beside documentation you might want to look inside a zLinux (REDHAT or SUSE) DVD
Alen.
I don;t think z/Os has to do with this. This is a stand alone IPL. DSS S/A
image can be generated as a card-reader image (F/80/80) which is also
supported by tape (according to the manual). Anyway, the HMC does allow
to load S/A utilities from CD, but it requires an INS file that points to

Well I found this document :

But don't know the way to convert those actions so they will match zOS , and
how to create the .img files of the memorey images

Radoslaw,
I wonder what your advise was. I am looking for an answer to what you
defined as "another question".

You answerd yourself. Is IPL form DVD possible? YES. Linux DVD is one of
the evidences.
During z/Linux installation it is possible to use the HMC's DVD drive as a
tape drive. I wonder is DSS S/A can be started (Loaded) from same device and
not from a IOCP defined device.
