I worked at a JES3/JES2 shop many aeons ago.
Two sites were JES2 and one was JES3.
They were connected by NJE/NJP with many complications if jobs were submitted 
on one node and had to execute on a node with a different JES.

This came about due acquisitions and mergers.

When we were ready to convert to XA (that tells you how long ago it was), we 
decided to convert the 3-site to a 2.
The reasons were:
1. Our last JES3 SYSPROG left.
2. The job complications.
3. Even IBM Canada had problems understanding JES3.
4. JES3 wasn't ready for 31-bit, at the time.

We did have to implement THRUPUT Mangler and upgrade from SDSI to MXI (now MIM) 
to get the features and functions under JES2, that were a given with JES3.
