Now of course Emerson did write:

But he omitted to distinguish foolish and non-foolish consistency. The
adjective 'foolish' is thus mere invective, parseable as 'of the sort that a
speaker or writer disapproves', and thus dispensable.
Justice Holmes, taxed with a fragmentyary quotation from a Greek poet--- He
put the words 'Live! For I come' into the mouth of Death on the occasion of
a celebration of hixs 90th birthday---replied that (a) his emendation was an
improvement and (b) that in any case all is fair in love, war, and
quotation.
