One thing to be careful when you read "unsupported". Many times it just means
that it isn't configurable via the IUI interface. I run some 3380-3 drives,
many 3390-3, some 3390-9 and a few 3390-27 packs. But I only have 3390-3
packs as the max size for VSE. (I just don't have a real reason for having
large packs for VSE.)

Our DS6800, under z/VM 5.1 is running our:

(5) VSE/ESA 2.3.2 systems
(2) VSE/ESA 2.5.1 systems
(2) VSE/ESA 2.7.2 systems
23 Linux systems from Suse 7.3, Suse 8.0, Suse 9.0 (31 and 64 bit systems)

But they are all minidisks.

I do run flashcopy, but I have only done the flashes from VM.
