Isn't there a contradiction between the first and the last two? It
cannot be both free and have no unused cylinders or tracks. The F5 DSCBs
determine what is free; the F1, F3 and F6 define what is allocated. If
the first or only F5 is all zeros, there is no free extent.

At least, we'll probably never have to wonder if VTAM manuals are out of
print. I've gotten the same set of VM/VSE/VTAM manuals since 1995.
Every new release of VM comes with the same set of VTAM doc. I wish
that Raleigh or whoever owns VTAM now would share some of their
documentation money
On a CPVOL, what is stored in the VTOC address field +x'0B'?
The question started on VSE-L due to a what's on this volume question.
The ownerid is CP370. The VTOC address field is there but is past the
end of the volume.

I didn't set up the mdisk. I just wanted to make sure there was no valid
reason for having a disk pack without an unreadable vtoc.

I don't know where it is documented now but the DASD and tape VOL1
records are the same format. The fields that are meaningful only tor
tape are reserved on DASD and those that are for DASD

I have the GC33-5375-2 DOS/VS DASD Labels (Release 34) manual.
Google only found 1 reference to it which is in the DOS/VS Program
Directory for Release 34.
Here is a brief description of the VOL1 label:

I used to have a 30 year old ?? OS manual that described the IBM format
1-5 DSCB fields. Don't know where I put it. Maybe it's with a S/360
Green Card or an old PofOPs manual.
I found this when I did a search on IBM for VTOC.
