Ten Things Not to Forget in z/OS Capacity Planning

Capacity planning for mainframes has been made easier in recent years.
z/OS and its subsystems now have better activity recording mechanisms.
Software products are better able to analyze the data produced by those
mechanisms. Many users also have a greater understanding of how business
activity drives system activity. All of these factors make it possible
to more accurately formulate a capacity plan, but care must still be
taken to avoid omitting critical factors and causing errors in
predictions.

Discover Business Units of Work to Improve Effectiveness of
Capacity and Performance Management

IT resource consumption metrics are often considered to be the tell-all
?vital signs? of IT systems. But this alone is like checking a patient?s
pulse and respiratory rate and saying that they are healthy even though
the patient may be suffering from an undiscovered terminal disease. The
lights may be on, but are the IT systems you manage perceived as cost
effective, reliable and well performing by the business users? During
this session, attendees will learn from the presented concepts and case
studies about the new techniques which enable analysts to:

            - Understand how a specific business unit of work translates
into often numerous IT units of work,
            - Discover the flow of the application conversations which
create workload on the IT infrastructure, and
            - Improve performance management activities by connecting IT
resource consumption metrics with business units of work.

Best Practices in Batch Tuning - Empowering IT Staff to Reduce
CPU and Run-Time in the Enterprise

This session will explore the key factors that often limit the focus of
batch tuning, and discuss the technology framework and methods that
effectively assist performance and capacity staff as well as empower other
key staff members in the identification and resolution of batch tuning
opportunities.

instrumentation facility available on System z10 EC GA2 and z10 BC. This
session wioll describe what CPU MF is, and is not. It will describe
system requirements, configuration steps needed to utilize CPU MF, and
analysis tips. We will then detail Washington Systems Center experiences
and discuss future directions for CPU MF, focusing on Workload
Characterization.
