It is my understanding that the sidepull was actually developed by a cutting horse trainer for starting young horses. It gives you a bit more stability that a halter; the rein attachment is meant to teach steering with a direct rein - it is more forward on the horse's nose that rope halter or bosal so it may be that when you go to neck rein it is confusing because there is more of a sideways pull on the horse's nose? Also what weight of reins are you using - on you regular bridles and the sidepull? That will make a difference to the feel for the horse.
