No, I've seen hedgehogs in pet stores! I don't think I've ever seen a real
porcupine, even in a zoo.

the little hedgehogs were somewhat popular a while back-they were cute but
more of a novelty i think. they had spines but didn't shoot them-just be
careful when picking them up :)

I really wanted one. They're the cutest things, but their sale has been

The trapper has been coming out daily to check the lodge and dam--he
hasn't caught anymore beavers but he did find a dead deer in the dam.

Well, some only go after them once. Some never seem to learn. Depends
on the category into which your dog falls :)

Not just dogs, either. I had to pull a quill out of the soft little nose
of a yearling filly.
I looked out across the fields one day and saw our neighbor's heifers

Hubby put her in the 'Dumb Dog' category, but since she's a Wire Fox
Terrier I suppose she can't help herself being bred to go after
rodents.

I realized what it was, but it looked so calm and
soft so I went a bit
closer--then BAM, up went the quills and it didn't
look so soft
anymore.
When I was a kid, my dad stepped on one in the middle

Are they the same family as beavers/badgers/ferrets (mustelidae)?
They are rodents. Family- Hystricidae (just learned that). They are
distantly related to hedgehogs.
Beavers are rodents as well and are the only living members of the
family -Castoridae.

It's been suggested but I can't. Hubby wants to coax it into his
truck bed and drive it away somewhere.

A friend's husband who was trying to re-home a rattlesnake used a metal
trash can and a lid. That probably would work for a porcupine.

Sounds like a good idea.

We had a beaver dam once. I loved it. Of course the guys who come along
and clean the irrigation ditch destroyed it, but I thought they were
fascinating creatures.
