I think the solution is to make sure that the latest version is being used.
You need the version from:
http://cars9.uchicago.edu/~ifeffit/src/iXAFS3.0.2.dmg

When I click on the application, the iXAFS window comes up, but none of the
applications open up when I try to start them. The xterm window opens, but
then nothing happens,
