Well i'm using DELL inspiron 1525 for the last two years and i have no
prob.I've tried various distros they all work well. But i prefer to
use ubuntu and slackware. I think zyxware Technologies provide good
service

Pitvi is a good one.Other good video editing softwares are Kino for DV
videos and Avidemux.their are some other video editing softwares like Open

Ubuntu does work on most laptops out of the box. You may not be able
to get some manufacturer specific features to work , like the hot
keys. Even if you buy a Linux friendly laptop, there can be problems
later on when you try to add additional hardware (in your case mouse)
