Scilab is also an alternative to Matlab in linux. Scilab has a built in
translator to convert small changes in .m file to scilab file. (changes
like % for comment in matlab is \\ for scilab ...)
it also has a module called Xcos for modeling, equivalent to simulink.

try the live cd and check if you get unity. Also increase swap to 1.5
gb if u can spare.
