looks like bsnl's EVDO datacard doesnt have good coverage other than cities.
People suggested me to go for 3G datacard USB type for laptop usage.

But i would like to check with u if these models work smoothly in ubuntu

Bsnls EVDO card doesnt works well in ubuntu 10.04.. Most of the times it is
slow.. you may get speed if you have good coverage..
