Location is everything. Consider Reliance vs BSNL based on that.
The speed is not the same in all towers. Make sure the tower near your
area is upgraded to EVDO, otherwise what you get is EVDO 1x RTT which
caps out at 144K. I found an older list of towers here

I am using reliance netconnect. The speed is very good in chennai,
Bangalore, Salem. However it is slow in rural villages. I guess it
works on Linux, though it is not officially supported. It has free
roaming too.
