I did *chmod and chown (recursively) on /mnt* thinking that it will give my

but the icon of the files in /mnt changed and they became inaccessible.
So I umounted all partitions , rebooted , deleted all files in /mnt

Pretty good strategy; running big bulky distros inside VMs doesn't
