Announcing a web interface to the ILUGD mailing List
====================================================

A web interface to the ILUGD mailing lists has been setup at:

<http://www.lug-delhi.org/forums/>

How does this work?
-------------------
Each and every mail sent to the <ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org> email
address is getting added automatically to the forum at:
<http://www.lug-delhi.org/forums/viewforum.php?f=2>

Similarly, each and every mail sent to the
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> mailing list is being added
automatically as a post at:
<http://www.lug-delhi.org/forums/viewforum.php?f=4>

At the same time, each and every post made at these web forums is
injected as a mail to the appropriate mailing list. Of course, for this
to happen, the poster (or rather his email address) should be a member
of both the mailing list and the forum. This is explained below.

At present only the <ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org> and the
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> are gatewayed to the forums. The
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> lists will
be added soon.

What is the motive for this exercise?
-------------------------------------
This allows subscribers to participate in the discussion using *either*
the mailing list or the web forum. At present, the forum on the
linux-delhi.org is disconnected from the mailing list, and therefore
posts made there are not attended to by mailing list members and
vice-versa.

Regardless of the advantages of plain email, many are more comfortable
with a web forum interface. These people frequent the forums instead.
However, with the majority of the members frequenting the mailing list,
the participants to the forums have been generally left out. This
exercise brings together both these forms - emails and web forums, to
interconnect with each other.

Additionally, there is now an [RSS feed][1] for the mailing list! :)

What are these various _username AT domain_ posts in the forums?
------------------------------------------------------------------------
These are guest posts created for mails in the list, where the poster is
not subscribed to the web forum.

* If one is subscribed to the forum and not to the list, his mails will
  not reach the mailing list.
* If one is subscribed to only the mailing list and not the forum, his
  posts will appear as the boring _user AT domain_ guest posts in the
  forums.
* If one is subscribed to both the mailing list and the forum, his posts
  to the mailing list will be correctly attributed to the user in the
  forum. You can check this in any forum - such posters' names will be
  hyper-linked to their forum profiles.

How can I post from the forums to the list?
-------------------------------------------
Merely registering to the forum is not enough. This will only ensure
that your posts are visible within the forum. To actually see your forum
posts appear on the list, you need to do the following:

1. Ensure that you are registered to the forum with a valid email
    address.
2. Register to the appropriate ILUGD mailing list using the same email
    address.
    * If you don't want to receive mails and only want to interact
      using the forum, login to the mailing list account area, and set
      the _disable mail delivery_ option there.
3. Login to the web forum, and click on the _Forum subscriptions_ link
    at the top of the page. Select the mailing lists you want to
    interact with.
4. From now on, any post that you make in the forums will appear in the
    corresponding mailing list.

Where is the RSS feed of the forums?
------------------------------------
The primary [RSS feed][1] aggregates all the new posts of all the
forums. If you want to track a particular forum, or want to customize
how the RSS feed is generated, you can generate a [feed customized to
your needs][2].

"I find this whole thing senseless","I have a suggestion to offer", etc.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do send back your feedbacks either to my email address or at
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. Alternatively (and better), you can rant at the
[lug-delhi.org website forum][3] which has been created solely to
discuss lug-delhi.org projects.
