Hi, After a productive meeting yesterday, it was decided that we can announce the revised dates for the Bioinformatics Workshop to be conducted in JNU. I'm copying Gora's original message with the changed information below.
--- SNIP --- We would like to start getting commitments from people to participate in the program. It will be a 6-week workshop held on the JNU campus, from the beginning of July 3 to August 12, 2006. Over the longer term, the idea is to come up with a complete suite of open-source software for bio- informatics. The work will be sub-divided into smaller projects, and student programmers from local Delhi colleges will be partnered with people from JNU having expertise in bio-informatics. The student programmers will do the actual coding, working alongside bio-informatics students from JNU. The process will be guided by mentors with expertise in open-source software practices. Over these six weeks, we would be doing well to have a software requirements specification (SRS) completed for all projects, and maybe coding started. Thus, there are two kinds of participants that we need, namely mentors and student programmers. Mentors will need to be able to show prior involvement in at least one open-source software project or group. While programming skills, especially in Perl, Python, Java, C and C++, are desirable, knowledge of software design is a must. Mentors would also need to have at least 2 years experience in software design and development. Mentors will be approved by a committee drawn from ILUG-D and JNU, will be paid about Rs. 750/day, and will have to commit to being available over the 6-week period, though, of course, not every day. Students should have excellent programming abilities, and will be screened through a simple programming test. Students will need to commit to being at the workshop every working day of the six weeks. Arranging payment for students is a little more difficult for JNU, but we should be able to at least cover travel expense, and it might be possible to arrange accomodation in JNU hostels. Students will also be given a certificate of participation from JNU at the end of the six weeks, pending succesful progress in their project.
