dear all, ashwin of linux-delhi, wishes to write a 'howto organize a newbie meet in india' and just wanted to know howto write the howto :-)
so i just sat down, and created a new document, which is essentially a howto write the howto using openoffice, AND a design template of openoffice, that anybody could use, under the FDL. :-) this document is called HeavenlyHowTo.sxw, and HeavenlyHowTo.pdf, and is available at linux-delhi.org under the downloads area. So ashwin, you could get it, read the design+edit+layout+other tips suggested in it. Then just replace the text with your own, and you have your own instant HowTo document! yup, others could use it for their work and presentations, too. Next week, will also create an openoffice impress design template that could be used for slide presentations by linux-delhi members, and of course, by anybody on the planet. will give us all a consistent design metaphor and communication style. some additional tips for ashwin's specific document: objective: create a howto document using end-user, relatively non-techie tools and formats, for distribution across media. 1) define your readership. in this case, it is not a linux-newbie, but someone who is organizing a meet for linux-newbies, this could be either a techie or a non-techie, or even an events management company(!) 2) create a catchy headline. important to have a qualifying sub-title, that mentions the readership-type the document addresses. 3) jot down the outline of all the points you wish to cover. keep some communications guidelines clear: a) i prefer such documents to be in the range of 3 to 7 pages. anything else will be ignored. one-pager even better. b) write short paragraphs. c) use simple angrezi, direct phrases, and short sentences. d) provide hyperlinks to the image-gallery of the linux-delhi newbie meet you hosted. don't embed images in the document, it must be really small and compact to email others. e) mention unique recipe of those delicious samosas.
