Hi all,

I recently managed to install Ubuntu Feisty on my brand new HP Compaq 6710s
laptop and thought of sharing my experience with the list in case it helps
someone. I faced two major problems with this particular laptop.

First is the 80GB Hitachi SATA Hard Drive which Linux Distros simply fail to
detect without some BIOS tweaking. I tried Knoppix, Ubuntu Warty, Ubuntu
Feisty, Debian Sarge and Morphix NLP, without success, before googling to
find out that SATA support in Linux is still iffy. Changing BIOS settings
for the drive from "Native" to "Compatibility" fixed this problem.

Second is the "very" new Intel 965GM chipset which is even newer than Ubuntu
Feisty and hence is not supported out of the box. To fix that I had to
install Feisty using the "alternate" cd with the text mode installer, which
installs fine but leaves you sans a GUI. To fix the X problem, all I had to
do was install the latest kernel by doing an "apt-get dist-upgrade" and then
install the intel video drivers by doing an "apt-get install
xserver-xorg-video-intel". Then I edited my xorg.conf file to use the
"intel" video driver and voila! I had a nice shiny gui :)

Followed that up with a "apt-get install beryl-manager" to get a "really"
shiny gui but that step is strictly optional (but highly recommended) :)
