Since you will be generating only local mails, you will need an SMTP
Server any way on the server. Disable relay and SMTP connections from
external interface to make sure that no one can exploit your SMTP
server.

However, if you want to give mailboxes to your users in your domain,
it is recommended that you use third party mail hosting services like
Google, Yahoo! or mail.com. All of them have good spam filters and
also support AV scanning on all incoming emails. If you are looking
for Indian email provider, there are two I can recommend - NetCore and
Directi.
