dear all, story below reflects the sad state of affairs of the world. i propose FLOSS be formally declared as a world intellectual property since literally it is born and nurtured by the contributions of the world community. so who is wipo to think it has deciding powers over this?
UNESCO(?) is talking about declaring FLOSS a world cultural heritage. meanwhile, can we do something about this in india? can we sign a petition, or start some campaign, that boldly shows to 1) governments 2) media 3) big businesses 4) ordinary folks, that FLOSS is a world intellectual property, of, by, for, the people? we <> me we=we its about time the lion in all of us roared. :-) LL *** WIPO Pressured to Kill Meeting on Open Source panthan writes "The Washington Post has has an article about a proposed meeting of the WIPO concerning open source having been [0]removed from consideration, apparently due to pressure from the US State Department and the USPTO. 'In short order, lobbyists from Microsoft-funded trade groups were pushing officials at the State Department and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to squelch the meeting. One lobbyist, Emery Simon with the Business Software Alliance, said his group objected to the suggestion in the proposal that overly broad or restrictive intellectual-property rights might in some cases stunt technological innovation and economic growth.'" Lawrence Lessig has [1]some comments.
