Not on an Al iMac... the only model that has ever opened up like that is the G5 
iMac.

Buy a powered USB hub for more UB ports, and more external drives.

But continually adding drive space is not cheap.

You could get one of these:

Since Firewire is daisy-chainable, simply rinse and repeat as the collection 
grows...
