The 424 works just fine with Airport cards.

Start with the basics. Turn on the SSID. Turn off all encryption - both WEP and WPA. Make sure the Mac can connect and talk thru it properly. Then enable WEP, and make sure the Mac can talk. Then disable WEP and enable WPA, etc. One step at a time.

If you're unable to do those steps, then show us what you've got. Show us the Airport settings and the router's settings...
