I'd be utterly surprised if many IMAP clients have fallback strategies at all. In fact, I don't know about any that do. Cyrus: Does Mulberry ever switch to Plan B in a comparable case?

Of course, the whole point of IMAP is not to need a fallback strategy; the server is supposed to parse things as best as is possible.
