ehhh?  Time to look before asserting -- the same might be said
of similar vintage HP-UX 10.x -- with equal relevance to the 
present.

... the 2G kernel file limit has been gone for perhaps three
years -- it left in the middle 2.2 kernel series. Vendors such
as Red Hat then set to work cleaning up the toolchain
(basically re-compiling with a set of 64 bit extensions
enabled), and by RH 7.0 (almost two years ago now,) toolspace
was largely clean.
