Are we talking merely the geometry of the hydrology? I think that would be
suitable if the ways are connected properly.

No. OSM is no free geospatial data hoster and our data model is not
suitable for this usecase. Hydrological data is 3D, OSM is 2D (with some
hacks 2.5D).
