Hi,
When plants are young {as also in the case of Asana [Bridelia sp.] & Silk
Cotton [Bombax sp.]} they are armed to act as a deterrent to grazing animals.
As it grows older and larger it tends to loose its spines.

I agree with the id, Surajit ji. Very nice pictures.
It should be the typical variety of *P. foetida*.

soon and I have observed it flowering from January to March end at
Matheran. However Matheran is dominated by Anjani trees but the flowering

Thanks again Neil sir. I have a question, does this tree also come
without spines? I had posted some photos few days back and it was also
identified as Xantolis tomentosa but that tree did not have any
spines. Here is the link :

Dear Bengali-knowing friends,
Most of the references has *udal* - local name for *Sterculia villosa*, in
much of north-eastern India including Bengal.
Please provide me the name in Bengali script.

Dear Surajit Ji,
Sorry for my delayed response!
Firstly thanks for sending me the literature of Bengal plants. I think your
doubts are genuine. May I request you to check (if possible) the nuts of
the plant? If they are biconvex, it would be P. pulchra (Blume) Sojak, if
trigonus, P. stagnina
