It appears to be a short, compact plant rather than the standard tall 
sunflowers. 

There is a purple leaf vein visible. 

We cannot see the flower fully opened but you might try looking at 
Helianthus annuus 'Mrs. Mars'. 

Since you found this in a garden there are many other possibilities.
