The "Open Source Development with CVS"-book only states, that this is
seldom used and not explained. I also did not find it anywhere else.

This is the classic RCS-functionality. On Windows you can try
CS-RCS PRO which is free for personell use.

The problem is your rsh access. Read section 2.9.2 of the CVS-manual!

expected to grow to slightly more than the size of the sources in a
single directory, or two megabytes, whichever is larger.
So check your installation and increase the amount of virtual memory...
