Thanks for your quick response. It was a clue from another respondant that put me on the right track. Turns out I had a bad .cvsrc file in my home directory. All is well with the world again (but I came -this- close to using your suggestion!) Tony Waite.

I'm hoping that someone can suggest what I can do next. I have CVS 1.10 on a sun unix box. I am using it 'directly' (i.e. not client/server). I imported a large and heavily edited project and was surprised to see a lot of *~ files end up in the repository. This seems to contradict the document
