have a look at the section concerning the revision numbers in any
tutorial. The revision numbers are cvs-internals, you shouldn't think
about them. If you want to have number for your own purposes, you have
the possiblity to set tags or even branches.

obnoxious (to me) revision numbers such as "1.1.1.1.2.2". Is there
some way to shorten this? I do have some such as "1.1.1.2.2.4" and
