We have the field on our form for registration. If the parents
fill it out, we enter it into our SIS system. If they don't, we do not
pursue it any further.
Our SIS person says it is strange that the state tells us not to
ask for that information, but then they ask for it w

In Emmetsburg we have it on our registration forms, but do not make a big deal
if they don't want to give it. About 90% give it and the rest don't. We still
collect it if the parents want to give it.

1. Schools are not a big target for identity theft. I don't know about you,
but we don't store financial data (credit cards, checking accounts) with
student data, and the existing info without the SSN is adequate to steal
someone's identity anyway
