Most radio listening takes place in the car or while doing other things that
allow freedom for the ear, but not the eyes and hands. Podcasts permit a shift
of listening time from a set appointment to virtually any convenient occasion.
I do it while “power walking” (most) every morning in what sometimes seems like
a vain attempt to diminish the results of sitting behind a desk for 35 years.
The act of putting one foot in front of the other can be pretty monotonous and
by “podding along” while plodding along the mind also gets something useful to
do. So it is with the time spent commuting to work day after day.

Some of the best radio comes from the public networks of the UK, Australia,
Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and the U.S. Apart from the originating program’s
web site, most programs are made available through any number of other
amalgamation sources such as iTunes and TuneIn.

Admittedly, these are thoroughly subjective recommendations, but my interests
and tolerance for incompatible views are pretty wide-ranging. Here’s another in
a continuing series of small samplings, offered in a 90 minute scope (more of
less):

“How Soon Can We Go Carbon Zero?"
THE INQUIRY - BBC World Service
This month activists all over the world have taken over city centres, demanding
urgent action to halt climate change. They say we need to eliminate all carbon
emissions by 2025. Most people think that’s impossible. But scientists are
warning that if we want to stop global warming, we need to cut our CO2
emissions fast. So how soon can the planet achieve carbon zero? (30”)

“Democracy is Failing the People"
BIG IDEAS - ABC RN
Is our democracy serving us well? How would you measure it? We have the right
to vote in free elections and we don’t have wars when the government changes.
But, a lot of people have lost faith in the way the system works. In
Australia, we’ve had six Prime Ministers in a decade, corrupt politicians in
both major parties, flouting of ministerial responsibility and a seeming
inability to deal with the big issues like climate change. Is the democratic
system to blame, or – as the old saying goes - do people get the governments
they deserve? Highlights of Democracy is Failing the People, an Intelligence
Squared debate, presented by the Ethics Centre. August 27, 2019. (55”)
