FWIW, vimperator opens text areas in your editor of choice
with ctrl-i. I don't remember how to configure it though.

Your local setup is wrong. X should automatically pick 8859-7 if your
locale says so.

Statusbar font is in one of the lookcommon_*.lua files. The default is
misc-

file but that only seems to change the font for the F3 Run: command.
