A very unscientific survey, as I haven't had a chance to do more than a
cursory scan of the band in the mornings this week, but the activity
seems considerably lower than it has been the last couple of mornings.
The big Japanese are only fair carriers, unlike audio I noted

One oddity - there is a decent carrier (perhaps the
strongest on the band) on 1017, which is definitely not the norm.
I noted 1017 (Tonga) last night at 0630UTC significantly stronger
than usual for this (or any) time of the year.
Maybe the antenna engineer went out and replaced a bunch

Current value of the K index is 6. A major storm is in progress. The A
index, which is a composite index mirroring the K is currently at 4.
Typically it lags the K by 6 hours or more. If the K stays at 6 for any
significant length of time, we can anticipate values of A at 30+ to
follow.

Mike,
Yes, the farther North you get, the more the AK do make a huge
difference. If the numbers stay high, I can pretty much kiss the test
goodbye. Now if it was South East of me, like FL, then that would be a
different story.

Very nice audio for being that far away. Local Ridgefield TIS on 530 knocks

You folks in the great NW demonstrate over and over the top three factors of
successful TP DXing:
1)location 2-3) see #1. Just keep rubbing it in about all those TPs. I
have had an SRF M78 for more years than I can remember and it's my

Here's my contribution from Scotland on the subject of audio quality.

sunrise). I'd give it a 9.

Hello All,
Thanks to Colin for re-posting my mini-review of the Sony SRF-59
Walkman, an incredible overachiever for $20..00. The TP conditions certainly
were
not the best last night, so I am eager to see how this tiny analog DX radio
will perform when conditions really improve.

Dr. Xin also comments on the AM sensitivity. He likes the SRF M-59, 83 and
M-35V for MW sensitivity. He attributes performance to Sony's proprietary
IC and Sony's secretiveness about it--like Coca Cola recipe. As far as
unmodified performance, the M-35V, performs the best, according to him.

I've had the SDR-14 at New Bedford, MA on the south coast for a few days.

Hello J.D. Stevens and Others,
I haven't yet written any formal review of the Sony SRF-59 Walkman, but
I have offered to do so for Colin's excellent dxer.ca web site, and he has

rejection seem incredible,
Craig,
It looks like IBOC has laid the egg before it even got going. The same
reports I have heard everywhere. No one is interested.
I doubt many IBOC radios will be stocking stuffers.
