Bill,
KJR being on Harbor Island for years running 5 KW U2 ran their power
basically N/S. But when they moved to Vashon and co-located with KGNW

not as much signal directed to Vancouver, but they sure send a big chunk

Nick,
I heard and QSL'd my first TPs, TA's, and DUs in 1966 while living in
Seward AK. But the dial was alive with them in the late 60s and 70s here
on the coast. Not as many, as they were not on splits as yet, but if the
channel was clear, I would hear them often. 780 4YA was common, 1ZD then

Until a couple of years ago KJR was a pop/rock station running on 5 kw from
towers on Vachon Island across the harborfront from downtown and threw the
strongest signal of all the greater Seattle stations into Victoria. When they
went to sports they applied for a move of their towers to a locati

I'm not sure what I can derive from the early years.

Gary,
Yes, indeed. But living out here most of my adult life, I have found the
signal strength is just not there for the DUs generally. You couild
easily hear DUs up and down the dial in the early 80s/late 70s. Many on
portables. You did not really need good selectivity, as the signal would

Walt,
We have had other periods that DUreception was not much. It may just the
period we are going through. As far as junk in the atmosphere. Volcanos
have sent stuff into the sky for years and I have no idea if that
affects it. Who knows? But hopefully things will impove in the future.

Hello Patrick,
Thanks for your observations. I was also an AM-DXer chasing TP's and
DU's with portables around 1979-80, but found little time to DX, as a Navy
sonar technician. As I recall, Aussies and Kiwis were quite easy to receive

Thanks again for the solar info of the early 80s. One tip listed, I have

Should have slept in, I'm afraid. Listened between 12:05 and 12:20 and found
only one very strong carrier.RFO Tahiti on 738, with French

other interesting thing of note was 846also with a strong carrier, but

Gary,
Thanks for the observations on DU vs. TP DX. Yes, the DU DX just is not
what it once was on a regular basis. It sounds like the last couple of
mornings were pretty good though. In 1979/80, I could easily hear
several DUs on a barefoot Super Radio, about the time I got my first one
for $49.95
Hello Guys,
The discussion of recent DU propagation is very interesting, but after
six trips to Grayland recently for the express purpose of chasing DU's with
Ultralights (both hot-rodded and stock), it's certainly clear that typical
signal levels are much weaker than the rare condit
Thanks Dennis. It looks like the A&K were quite high a lot of the time.
Maybe that had something to do with the South Pacific CX.
