1710UNID station fading up and down with a male speaker in what
sounds like accented French. Another station was under it playing old
Spanish ballads at 0435 EST 1/15. Any ideas? Off the Eastern beverage.

No doubt about it is French, sounds like French you might hear from an
African nation or maybe Haiti. Much like the Haitian TV station I get
off satellite. Is this one of the NE pirates? If so, can a QSL be
obtained? Except I am not sure if there is more than one on 1710. There
is that old SS
It is 0517 EST and the French station is still coming in. In checking on
a list Bruce Conti back in Nov 08, cites R Soleil International moving
from 1620 to 1710. This might be what I am hearing. It seems to be very
professional broadcaster for a pirate. Taking telephone calls. Some

Mystery solved!!! I got good copy on them this morning for about 10 minutes
(7:40 - 7:50 am EST), and the minister that I thought was Billy Graham
turned out to be John Hagee. I then went to the John Hagee Ministries
website and sure enough, WWNL 1080 is listed for Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.

Congrats on your new toy, Rob.
Rob makes a good point - Bedside DX'ing can be fun and a good way to
spend time on a sleepless night. If I wake up in the middle of the
night, I grab a ULR. I know the various radios by touch and can DX
without waking the wife or our son, Gizzie, the Dog. Gizzrad

Both VOA and HLAZ heard this morning, occasional very brief appearances. VOA

Hi Dennis,
The same lackluster results here. I listened on both sides of max dawn, and
only found a weak 1566 HLAZ, and a trace of carrier from 1575 VOA Thailand.
No sign of any life on the mid or low-band.
Let's hurry that spring equinox along!

Craig,
I was wondering, but East Coast conditions were excellent last night. I
should have jumped around a bit more. I have had 10 watt TIS stations
from the East Coast like JFK on 1700 and VA on 1620 in the past. With no
stations being on 1710, there is no QRM, so that Haitian lp job is

If you have been noticing a weakened signal from WABC-770 in the greater
Toronto area, southern Ontario, or western New York, it's because that
little brokered-ethnic daytimer WTOR have been leaving their carrier on all
night after their sign-off. It's been left on for the past week at least.

I am curious as to the actual location of the XE on 1700 (XEPE?
XEKTT?) serving San Diego. It is seemingly licensed to Tecate, but
the map does not exactly show Tecate as a suburb of Tijuana. Southern
Californians, can you enlighten me? Thanks. (This is sort of moot

The Google map shows two towers but I'm sure Bill is right. Maybe they built
a second as a backup or perhaps they were once directional. There is a
graveyarder not far from here (KVEN-1450) that was once directional. See:
