I picked the ALA100 because of the fact that you can use it in VERY close proximity to buildings and sources of noise (QRN) - it is very immune to electrical noise because it is a magnetic antenna. It is also directional - and the limited space on an Apartment balcony or lanai is a HUGE plus. --

Just as a follow-up, a cardioid pattern can be broken into parts. It is equal to the combination of a vertical and a loop antenna. Adding another loop antenna to mix would probably just make the main lobe of the original cardioid even wider with slightly less pickup in the center of the main lobe.
