While looking for CKGR Golden BC before they move to FM, I heard these,
but no CKGR as yet.
1400 KSPT ID, Sandpoint with "Northern Idaho's Talk KSPT nd KBFI" at
0205 EDT 8/22. (PM-OR)
1400 CKNL1 BC, Clearwater, on top briefly with man "N-L" IDs at 0155
EDT 8/22. (PM-OR)
1400 CIORBC,
Glenn Hauser mentioned that Jim Bohannon's "talk show is harder and harder to
find on the air." I would agree with that--he seems to be the king of regional
and graveyard frequencies--but he does have at least one widely-heard
blowtorch: KDKA-1020. Did you notice their Station Finder page still
The reason Jim is getting harder and harder to find on the radio is his
listener demos are getting older and older. .and no one wants to program to
that. Plus, he's a bit DRY...

DXing along the OR coast, you see dramatic changes as you go from
location to location. First, if you have high mountains directly behind
you to the East, you get more blockage from mainland stations. The
Pacific station seem stronger and much less QRM. Seaside for instance

A BBC Research Report (RA-25) showed 2 to 3 dB better signal on top of a
160 meter cliff than on the beach below. 200 meters away from the cliff
edge, the improvement was only .4 dB.
The BBC Research Reports are freely available online if anyone is curious.

Hi Bill,
The ocean cliffs on the Oregon coastline seem to really boost the South
Pacific DX signals for me during summer listening sessions, but I've
never run A/B signal level tests with someone at sea level on the
beach, so I can't tell you exactly how much of a gain advantage this

Hi Derek,
Thanks for your comment on the Oregon cliff DXpedition trip, and I wish
you could have been along to see the scenery, and hear the DX. The
ocean view from the cliff looked like something under a 747 jet window,
such as in the new west view photo posted at

Hi Gary,
I'm not a professional signal seeker and I don't have the experience in the
field so to speak but I'm wondering if there's an advantage of high elevation
near water over sea level right on the beach for capturing TOs ( trans ocean)
signals. Does capture on top of a high cliff actually
Hi Gary,
I'll have to enjoy the TP loggings vicariously at least for now. No
plans to visit either coast until next year about this time a trip to
Daytona, FL.
Thanks for documenting tour trips.

All five Radio Rossii Russian long-waves were heard this morning at listenable

Three medium wave TP's were heard.

Great job on the CTOSdX (cliff top ocean side). CT is can produce amazing
results at times and is the only way I DX. Even the basic 200 ft wire can kick
some butt. I'd like to try your micro set up one day. As you may know, it's
dangerous rolling out wire in the dark cliff top : ) sorry I miss
The Fairmont in San Fran or the one in Berkeley?
Used to live about 3 blocks from the one in Berkeley.
It's a nice city to visit but the Bay Area is very expensive, or it was
in the early 1990s, and commuting was always a pain.
Never did any DXing while I was there but I'd bet places like Til
For your loop frame the gray PVC electrical conduit is UV resistant but
not as rigid as Sced. 40 but I had an active SW antenna housed in Sced.

years with no noticeable deterioration.
I use back to back varactors for tuning
