Feeling inspired after the excellent SRS/SSS presentation by Kaz at
the convention, and knowing this is an optimum time of year, I made an
effort this morning (in my location, SRS to the east offers more targets
than I have for SSS west). The results were quite impressive. One

Definitely an improvement today, right from 1300UT onwards. Even
slight residual audio from 972 and 1566 at 1600UT, but, slight.
pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

Hello All,
After reading Nigel's report about this year's lack of Chinese signals in
Alberta, I can understand why propagation is such a fascinating science. The
Chinese have always had the edge here, and this morning the propagation seemed
to give them an extra boost. 603-China (Hulun B
A big step up from yesterday, but pretty much only for Japan, and
especially on the lower half of the band. The Chinese don't seem to be
getting into Alberta very well this season for some reason. Apart from
the audio listed below lots of carriers, quite a number at the
near-audio level.

Forwarded from the DX tip listserver. I got them here at 1919 CDT with
Broadway/Vegas-style show music
and a recorded "WKSH, Sussex" ID by a male. Never was able to log Cali or
Oregon while WKSH was off. Must be their first day back on.

Hi Neil,
The 1140 in Vegas runs CBS Sports Radio. You might want to keep that in mind
before you engrave Sacramento in stone. :)

As usual in late Oct, SSS DX to my west was decent last night and I'll post a
few highlights. I expect to find more once I completely go over the recordings
but nothing new was found so far. Times CDT.

The three tones and a female voice indicate PA DOT or PA Turnpike. The calls
are WPUV623. This is a PA DOT
series of transmitters located respectively at I-80 exits 16, 18, 19, & 21 in
Clearfield, and exit 22 in Lock Haven, as
well as one on I-80 in DuBois. There's not any way to know which one
Thanks, Russ. I've come to suspect those three tones as being PA, though it's
been hard to tell - so appreciate knowing. The tones sound very similar - if
not completely similar (!) to ones NY State uses for its Thruway HARs.

Hello All,
As Dennis reported, there was a major boost in Chinese propagation this
morning, with 603-China (Hulun Buir?) producing a great signal here at 1410 UTC
(linked below). Other Chinese on 639, 936, 963, 1017, 1035, 1044, 1323 and 1377
all managed fair to good audio at times, along
Quick tune on the Eton E1 barefoot..
Between 1405 - 1410 single scan
529 - Alaska weather radio - loud.
594 - Japan - almost the best on the band with JJ talk
639 - loud het w/ near audio
738 - sounded like 2 stations, 1 with EE talk..
747 - surprisingly very little...
774 - Japan - the usual

Listened from 1337 to 1457 utc. Much more Chinese stations than usual. Even 657
produced some very weak audio, they been having a off season here this fall.
153 RUSSIA, Komosomolsk, Radio Rossii 1337 weak signal with man in Russian.
Fair at 1411. NW ewe. 10/29/2013

There's a whole whack of stations in PA on 1640, many of them in sync with
one-another. I've had echo effects on some TIS/HARs in the X-Band. For some
HARs I picture micro stations all along a highway, with NOAA there could be
repeaters in multiple communities, without any real way to know from
Wow, thats quite the vast forecast area. There is 1 640 in Clearfield,
Harrisburg and philly... so sounds to me like it's all a network, with
forecasts for the entire "network".
I'll have to check and see if I can hear Clearfield's 1640 from here.. im
about 45 minutes NW of it.

On Tue, Oct
I sat on 1640 for quite a while last night. The dominant station was an
NWS station "Total Weather Radio" that rose up to audibility every so often
with temps for various Pennsylvania locations, like Philadelphia and
Clearfield ... so could have been anywhere in the state. No call letters
noted,
TP signals were not propagating this far this morning. The only exception was
a carrier on 1566 kHz popping in and out at 1233 to about 1239 (LSR 1251).
There was no sign of the usual het on 972.
Receivers: PL-310 with 7-inch FSL.
Last evening, I received audible TA signals on 1215 and 1377,
