A rather unpredictable mess this morning
Listening to JOHR-1287 just now, moments ago, it was apparent Tonga
on 1017 running late, a fair number of tentative New Zealand, some
Australian, HLAZ on their Chinese service pattern, here's JOLF-1242
popping up. Nothing is very strong and

Like Nick has reported the band featured both Asians and trans-equatorial
propagation this morning, with 738-Tahiti again unusually strong here
throughout the session. The Asian big guns on 594, 693, 747, 774, 828 and
(especially) 1566 were back up to their typical strength during the predawn
Just heading out the door here Gary, so detailed analysis will have
to waitbut I must admit I supposed that Tonga was on late because
the talk sounded islandish rather than the expected English or
Korean. It didn't peak here until 1417UT, though had been nagging
for some time.
BUT,
I was up at 1215 to prepare for the Victoria marathon (volunteer in comms as a
ham radio guy...)
And according to NHP fish barrel it was a colorful hot mess -/ not a good
opening but one with a diversity of signals.
Curious to see what Nicks recordings turn up -- overall looks like a positive
I haven't been doing much of this lately, but after some "live" DXing
yesterday evening, I did an "until the laptop battery runs dry" SDR
recording overnight with my Conti Superloop pointing due north. This was
in part looking for new domestic stations, but probably does nearly as well

A little after 1400 UTC today I had carriers on 774 and 747 using a stock
barefoot Sony ICF-2010. No audio from presumed JOUB. Presumed JOIB carrier was
getting creamed by the KCBS IBOC.
I may get up earlier once in awhile to see what I can get. I have several
passive loops that might help. I

I heard what I assume was Tonga-1017 thundering in at 1350 with what
sounded like a sports play-by-play. It was definitely in an island
language and not Tagalog. Romania was mentioned several times.
The Rugby World Cup is taking place right now. Tonga is participating,
so Radio Tonga is
Dennis, I always found that the best time for TP's here in Arizona is around

Bruce and Nick,
Thanks for your comments on the 1017 mystery signal around 1400 this morning.
My reception of the signal was nowhere near as favorable as Nick's recording,
but I do remember that the other CRI stations on 963, 1044, 1206 and 1323 were
nowhere near audio at the time, which
It isn't nearly as exotic as Nick's recording of an apparent 1017-Tonga this
morning, but 738-Tahiti was also unusually strong from south of the Equator
this morning-- maybe a consolation prize for this lackluster location? This was
African-sounding music at good strength at 1343 UTC-- pretty
Perhaps, Neil. 1017 is there, much better (at least a lot less splatter)
right now at 05:52 UTC. Modulation isn't great, though. Rats, as I type
this, the signal just faded away to nothing. Hmm. Walt Salmaniw,

Day Two at Grayland was similar to what Gary and Nick reported, but with
a lot more stations. Some had consistent reception, others popped up
for a few minutes and then faded back into the mush.
DUs were in short supply and somewhat intermittent, despite having an
antenna aimed at 242
So Tonga is no longer signing off earlier? I ask since I sometimes have a
reasonable carrier on 1017 here and think there's a chance to log them in IL.

I hear accented English::23 "at the end of":31 "end of":32 "South

The same woman was heard before and after on Tonga with the same mix of English
and Samoan.

Gary -
The game was interspersed with a few blocks of talk up until 1416, but I don't
hear any more play by play after that. There are some ads in the following
minutes but I quit listening.
