If the worst of your interfering stations are opposite in direction
from the Pacific Ocean, a Kaz or Flag can be very helpful, as those
antennas have a quite broad pattern in one direction, and a good bit
of nulling capability in the opposite direction. They are
broadbanded as well, though s

Of course reception of New Zealand is considerably rarer in southern

after reading some of the posts in this thread. The season here seems
to be a bit later than observed on the coast, more like August 1 to Sept

program that followed faded very erratically for the next 15 minutes,
but never amounted to much,
It is interesting that there has been some fine
coastal receptions of New Zealand in recent
years, as I think I recall some pretty "dry"
summer DXpeditions back in the days of west coast
Vancouver Island adventures. Of course,
receivers, antennas and techniques have improved,

Brandon, your post shows the UTC time as being on Saturday Jan 10, which is

I'm guessing that's the case as all of the other times seem to point to a
Saturday night/Sun morning test period.

South Omaha,
A very interesting discussion.
There's no doubt that strong reception of New Zealand requires a serious dose
of salt water (or better yet, a cliff above salt water), but the peak season
for optimal Kiwi reception seems to be from July 1 to August 15th. Bill W.

Just to clarify the starting time of the WBOB DX Test, Brandon, I assume that
the EST, CST, MST, and PST times are correct and that the UTC times were meant
to read 0500-0800 UTC. Is that correct? I want to make sure the test isn't
really going to start at 0100 EST if the UTC times are correct

And you would be correct Chuck. On the coast, with the water

Thanks Eric I misunderstood. I am glad Canada is not using IBOC on AM. Here,
the few Canadians I get on FM are not strong enough to lock on IBOC, even if
they were using it. 96.1 Vancouver did give me a very brief RDS ID last Summer
though. 100.3 Victoria is the only stable Canadian I get 24/7.

I generally consider the prime MW DX "season" to end on April 30th, although
that doesn't mean that there isn't DX to be found after that date. I've had
freak midday receptions of WJR as late as mid-May in years past.
I think a lot of DXers shy away from the MW and LW bands from about May 1st t
Were I to read this without any other information, I'd think May to August was
dead in the Pacific NW except for a month of "better" NZ.
As I see it, that time period is not just "better", it is very good. And it's
not just NZ: it is also Australia and the Pacific Islands.

I tend to agree with Glenn and Kraig in believing DX season to be all

On the west coast, atmospheric noise levels don't increase markedly
