I think that the FSL-based Hawaii DXpeditions in April were a pretty good
learning experience for both of us. We were both swamped with lots of
transoceanic DX that we had never heard before, and had to adjust to the new
reality in a hurry.

I remember hearing stations from Brazil, Colombia and Peru here in Oklahoma in
the 1970's. Of course DX-ing was far easier then, especially with stations
closing down at night. It's been nearly 40 years since I last heard a South
American on medium wave.
