band reception on cheaper sets have generally been poor due to lack of

Well, there's someone across the valley from you who's also eager to do an
antenna transplant to his Skywave SSB :^) I've been considering whether
to attach a 7.5" Amidon rod antenna or try something else made from parts
on-hand.

Conditions after 1500UT until about 1545UT were a mix of DU and
Asian, mostly low band, with a couple of NHK2 stations the
strongest. Around 1545UT, the upper band got a bit more
interesting, though the domestic splatter level throughout the whole
period seemed to make getting reasonable aud
