I had some Duracell D's get a bit hot and bloat and ruin a radio.
I would bet some $ that Patrick's radio got pretty warm over time.

The only time I have ever seen anything like that was in Kenwood
rechargeable handie talkie batteries from the late 70's / early 80's.
Never with a non rechargeable battery.
