What kind of a load Patrick? How many amperes?
I take it that you only need 120 VAC, not 240 VAC?
I have several installed at my commercial sites. Some are the newer
full-time always-on inverter
If I had to do that, here's where I'd go..
Power Supply. Amateur Electronics Supply http://www.aesham.com

RS-4L 3A, 4A surge$49.99
RS-7A 5A, 7A surge$59.99
RS-10A 7.5A, 10A surge $69.99
Battery. Jeg's Automotive http://www.jegs.com

Rick,
All I want is power to run the R8, 12V at 2A. I was thinking of the UPS
as it is fully recharged by leaving it plugged into the wall, but I have
been told the inverter is very noisy in many cases. I fiqured that was
possible. So I guess the battery is my best option.

One other option for charging is the Volkswagen solar battery chargers that
are dash installed when VWs are transported from Germany to the U.S. They
show up for auction regularly on that well known auction spot in
cyberspace. Some QRP ops use them to trickle charge their rigs' batteries

Rick,
Thanks again. Much appreciated. I fiqure I have several choices from
running a cable from the van to the house to several battery types.
But I understand now the problems with the standard chargers plus even
power supplies.

Gil,
The problem here on the Oregon coast, it is cloudy so much of the time
in the Winter months that I don't know how well Solor would work. Evem
my little yard lights don't always keep the yard lighted most of the
night. I think I will try out the option using the van battery, since I
am parked
Opps forgot about where y'all live. Perhaps a waterwheel rigged to an
alternator? ;)

Gil,
You are right. Need a rowboat? 4 feet of water out in that field a lot
of the Winter. My ground sits in water, but lots of rain here. I am
thinking along the lines of one of those gelpak quick start units. I
don't know why one would not work.

Patrick, I don't use an UPS per se. Rather I use a battery back up from
APC http://apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=21
I use it to smooth some of the common mode interference that comes
through the mains power. It also helps with ground loop whining that
happens when you are running
It's a UPS. All UPS boxes use batteries as a reserve to supply power from
should AC go out. They're just using the battery backup phrase because it
makes more sense to people who don't know what a UPS is.

I guess the UPS that I am familiar with are the kind that continue to
run for a long time after the mains power goes down. We had one at one
location that I worked at that was a dynamo which ran off of the mains
and when the mains went down, it was already spinning and the diesel
engine fired up,
Bill,
I am looking for a battery backup that can be run several hours if
needed.
Thanks for the info.
