>From the Denver Business Journal: KCFR, Colorado Public Radio's news-and-information channel, is moving back to the high-fidelity FM band with the purchase of a new frequency for the station.
The main reasons for the change are "better [audio] quality and the fact that most people expect to find public radio on the left hand side of the FM dial," Max Wycisk, president of Centennial-based Colorado Public Radio (CPR), said Wednesday. CPR plans to purchase Denver station 88.1 FM from EMF Broadcasting of Rocklin, Calif., for $8.2 million. The 88.1 signal currently carries Christian music under the brand K-LOVE. CPR said it will move its KCFR news channel from 1340 AM to 90.1 FM, the frequency now used by its classical-music station, KVOD. KVOD would then slide down the FM dial to 88.1 FM. CPR plans to put its 1340 AM frequency up for sale. The changes will take effect this spring, subject to Federal Communications Commission approval, CPR said. EMF Broadcasting will continue to carry the K-LOVE programming on its 91.1 FM frequency, where K-LOVE is now simulcast. KCFR features the national news broadcasts "All Things Considered" and "Morning Edition," as well as talk, arts and feature programs such as "Fresh Air," "Talk of the Nation" and "This American Life." It also carries local news and the interview program "Colorado Matters" and world-news broadcasts from the British Broadcasting Corp. Until 2001, CPR broadcast both news and music on a single FM frequency. Then it split its programming into two stations, moving news to AM and keeping music on FM.
