I bought a beautiful Sony 2010 (the 2001 Euro model actually)

Right. One of the tricks here is to use 51J-4 w/3 or 1 Kcs. filter & phasing
control for splits, w/500 Kc J-4 output jacked into '2010, in SYNC DET mode.

Didn't have the mod done. Thought about it but ended up selling the
2010. Overall I'm partial to Grundig and Eton products. Also I hated
the tinny sound.
Don't get me wrong it is a great radio. I would love to do a side by
side with Eton E1. IMHO the E1 is very close to the Drake R8A.
