Subject: a spark in Semenyih

A NEW  CHAPTER OF JERIT FACTORY CAMPAIGN BEGINS

TWO HUNDRED WORKERS GATHER AT SEMENYIH

Semenyih, 11 September , 2004

It was called workers solidarity nite (Malam solidarity pekerja kilang). The name was not original because in Perak, four Malam solidarity have already being held. In Semenyih, it was the first attempt. The Organisers had an uneasy feeling as they feared the people will not converge. Just 100 meters from the venue, two other events took place. One was a music concert organised by MIC and backed by DJs from the famous THR radio show. Another was an important  religious event. Both this programme threatened the Workers Solidarity Nite and the organisers initially only assembled a mere hundred chairs.

As times went by, more chairs had to be added. The workers did not betray their solidarity night. The organisers fear slowly erased as more workers trickled into the hall. The hall was decorated with colourful posters and on the stage a huge painting of a clenched fist, supported by thousands of workers, breaking the chain of oppression stood majestically and with a very imposing message.

Yes, finally the factory workers demand has been launched in Semenyih bringing together around two hundred workers. The whole event was very energetic with a number of modern songs and dances performed by the young people, and occasionally a few old numbers are sang. In between the entertainment, several speeches were spoken by workers representatives, addressing the common problem of the workers and reminding the workers of the need to unite against the common enemy.

As a simple snack were served, a powerful powerpoint presentation was presented with an overview of the JERIT movement and in particular the struggle of the factory workers. Among the guest who spoke at the solidarity night was PSM National Chairperson, Comrade Nasir Hashim and MTUC’s education and training coordinator Somasundram. The event was also graced by factory workers who came from Perak.

One significant observation was there were lots of young people including children who was part of the solidarity night. Even the kindergarten children performed a sketch entitled “ Workers of the World Unite”. While the young were the symbol of youth and continuity, the older workers continued to guide on and also performed and sang a number of songs. All the performance were well received by the supportive audience whom applauded without fail.

As the event came to an end. The organisers who worked hard felt vindicated on the effort they put in. While the workers who came have chosen neither to go to the MIC function nor the religious event, it gave some hope to the struggle. The workers came because they felt that the emancipation of the working class can only be achieved by the working class themselves. One worker leader from Perak, Comrade Nathan said, “ Organising factory workers are not easy but congratulations to those who attended as you have started the spark here”.
