Christians back Sistani for Nobel

BAGHDAD: A group of exiled Iraqi Christians in the United States have launched an online petition nominating Iraq's top Shi'ite Muslim cleric for the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize, drawing more than 6,000 signatures from around the world. Grand Ayatollah Ali Al Sistani "gave Muslims all around the globe a good example how to follow peaceful ways to resolve complex social (and) political challenges that face them, condemning terror and emphasising ... rule of law," the petition said.

 

I'm an issue, says Blair

LONDON: Prime Minister Tony Blair said his personal standing with voters will be an issue in an upcoming national election. "I am an issue, I always will be," Blair said. "Whoever is the prime minister will be. ... If you are afraid to take criticism, you should go and do another job."

Six villagers killed

COLOMBO: Tamil Tiger rebels blamed a breakaway faction for the murder of six villagers in eastern Sri Lanka, but the military said the main guerilla group was responsible for the killings. Tigers said the renegade faction killed six supporters of the main group who had provided intelligence information about the breakaway group. But military spokesman Brig Daya Ratnayake said the six were murdered by 10 Tamil Tigers armed with rifles who stormed Sevanapitiya village bordering the restive Batticaloa district, 220km east of Colombo.

200 Qaeda men in UK

LONDON: The recently retired head of London's police force said yesterday that at least 100 terrorists trained by Osama bin Laden are at large in Britain. Sir John Stevens also said the threat justified tough anti-terror proposals, including placing suspects under house arrest without charge, that the government is struggling to get through Parliament. "As you read this, there are at least 100 Osama bin Laden-trained terrorists walking Britain's streets," Stevens wrote in the News of the World weekly. "The number is probably nearer 200 ... the cunning of Al Qaeda means we can't be exact.

Hitler's atom bomb!

BERLIN: Nazi Germany built a nuclear reactor and atomic weapons before the end of the Second World War, contrary to popular belief, a Berlin historian said. In his book Hitler's bomb, Rainer Karlsch says a reactor was functioning by the winter of 1944/45 and that nuclear weapons were being tested on a Baltic Sea island and Thuringia, central Germany, under the supervision of the SS. "The Third Reich was extremely close to winning the race to build the first working nuclear weapon," his publisher, Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt, said.

Indian beheaded

RIYADH: An Indian convicted of murdering a compatriot in Saudi Arabia was beheaded yesterday in the north-eastern town of Hafar Al Batin, the interior ministry said. The man had hit his victim over the head with a stone before slashing his throat and stealing his money.

Op success for baby

CAIRO: An Egyptian baby who had an operation to remove a second head last month has had a second operation to extract excess fluid from her brain. "We planted a valve in her brain in a one-hour operation on Friday that managed to stop her convulsions ... Manar's case is now stable with normal heart beat, blood pressure, enzyme level and reflex actions," Nasif Hifnawy, head of paediatrics at Benha Children's Hospital north of Cairo.

Federal rule 'likely'

NEW DELHI: India's Congress-led government was expected to impose direct rule in the politically crucial state of Bihar, after feuding parties failed to cobble together a majority after recent poll. Bihar's governor Buta Singh recommended federal rule after he was convinced no party could form a stable government in the eastern state.
