Can someone please help me with a Shia Sunni query. 1. Was Ali the Fourth Rightly Guided Caliph a Sunni or a Shia given that Sunnis recognise the first 3 caliphs ? Some literature suggests that Ali was a Sunni yet he is the first Imam 2. When and how did the split first take place. I gather it was not after the death of Hussayn but I may be wrong.
